  • Butler v. Perry, 240 US 328 (1916). Determines that the Thirteenth (13th) Amendment does not prohibit a state from compelling a citizen to labor. Considers the principle of trinoda necessitas and compares the “rights and privileges” of citizenry to the duties incumbent upon citizens.
